The remains of approximately 100 people were found at a spot along the Ganga near Safipur town in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district on Tuesday, prompting officials to make hurried arrangements to dispose of piles of bodies and skeletal remains.

Officials said the remains were likely to be of those given river burials upstream and had gotten beached at the site known an Pariyar Ghat.

The discovery was made after officials arrived at the ghat following rumours that it was being used to dump the bodies of those killed in the Unnao hooch tragedy on Monday.

Unnao and Pariyar are roughly an hour’s drive apart.

“The bodies were found along the banks after the river receded. According to some rituals, young, unmarried men and children are not cremated and their bodies are thrown into the Ganga instead,” Unnao district magistrate Saumya Agrawal said, explaining the way the bodies may have accumulated at the ghat.

Agrawal said the sub-divisional magistrate had been sent to the site to arrange for cremation and proper disposal of the bodies.

The area does not have a human settlement in the immediate vicinity but those residing in nearby villages said they had approached authorities several times over bodies thrown into the Ganga upstream piling up at Pariyar Ghat.

Narayan Tripathi, SHO Safipur, said the bodies seem to have accumulated over months. Some of the bodies could have also belonged to the kin of villagers of nearby who were unable to afford cremation.
