The recipes work. The language is honest. And the dishes range from ‘Sexed-up leftover dal’ to ‘Prince of Good Times’ Bacon Butty’. The prince, I assume, is Siddhartha Mallya, the son of the liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya, whose executive assistant happens to be Tushita Patel, the cookbook’s author.
Since Patel was born a Bengali, is married to a Gujarati and has travelled widely, her book takes you on a rollicking journey through Kolkata streets, Kalimpong schools, Delhi offices, Gujarati grocery stores, Mumbai bedrooms, Guardian newspaper columns, Shanghai restaurants and London homes.
Targeted at people who’ve access to various ingredients (from Kashmiri chillies to rocket leaves), the author effortlessly guides you through the pans, pressure cookers and ovens. If, like me, you’re not a compulsive cook, you must consider curling up with it in your bedroom — the best thing here (apart from recipes, of course) is the language, that is simple and chatty, informative and entertaining. This is probably the only cookbook this year you’ll want to read for the sheer pleasure of it.
