A 50-year-old gardener was arrested on Tuesday on charges of having raped two minor daughters of a neighbour repeatedly for over a week.
The crime was reported on Monday after the girls, aged 11 and 13, mustered the courage to ignore the threats of their alleged tormentor, Ram Pal, and tell their father about his acts.
Pal, who works at a thermal power plant near Bathinda, and girls’ father, a vegetable vendor, are from Uttar Pradesh. Both had moved to Bathinda four years ago in search of work.
The girls’ mother had recently left for her home in UP and their father worked late into the night. According to a police source, Pal allegedly took advantage of the girls when they were alone for long periods.
A police officer said, “We have registered a case under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (threat) of the Indian Penal Code.”
Rape in Indore
Indore: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in the city, police said on Tuesday. The crime occurred on Sunday, but came to light after two days following the registration of a first information report.
The police have arrested the accused and his sister-in-law, who has been named as co-accused in the case.
Police said the girl worked as a domestic help. According to the girl’s complaint, a relative of the accused lured her to come with him by promising to get her a good job. Later, the accused allegedly raped her and warned her not to lodge a complaint.
A large number of locals had gathered at the police station to ensure that police registered the FIR.
