Karnataka assembly speaker KG Bopaiah on Tuesday took seven hours to accept the resignations of 11 rebel BJP MLAs loyal to former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who has broken away from the saffron party to form his own outfit.
He had accepted one resignation – that of MLA Challakere Tippeswamy – earlier in the day. Of the 13 who resigned, the resignation of Vital Katakadonda has been kept pending.
The MLAs waited in the speaker’s chamber for a decision and even warned him of protest. Their resignations were accepted finally at 8pm.
Bopaiah said he was seeking directions from the secretary of the Lok Sabha speaker because he was unable to resolve the issue on his own.
He said the MLAs were quitting on “some” pressure and had not acted of their own accord. Finally, when no instruction came from New Delhi, the speaker accepted the resignations on legal advice.
The 12 MLAs figured in the petition signed by BJP MLAs Beluru Gopalakrishna and MV Nagaraju and submitted to the office of the assembly speaker on Monday.
They requested the speaker to disqualify them for their “anti-party activities”.
