There aren’t many food establishments in Mumbai that claim to serve authentic Lucknowi food and even fewer that actually deliver. So when Grand Nawabs opened up in Lokhandwala, Andheri, the place immediately caught our interest. No one seemed to know that the place had opened, so we had a tough time getting there.
Unfortunately, the ambience of the restaurant did not reflect rich Nawabi heritage or the tehzeeb that Lucknow is famous for. The place resembled a tacky bar. To top it all, the management felt the need to watch Bigg Boss on high volume throughout dinner.
Their menu claims: ‘We serve the best authentic Lucknowi food in Mumbai’ but the place had very few out-and-out authentic Lucknowi dishes. In fact, the restaurant offered dishes like Mumbai Se Kebab, Dilli Chilli chicken and even seafood!
We started with the Kakori Kebab (Rs 280) and Murg Ke Talli Tikke (Rs 250). The kebab had a melt-in-your-mouth texture, but the chicken tikka was laced with tequila and was a bit too sour for our liking. However, both ranked pretty high on the authenticity rating.
For the main course, we found few truly authentic options. In fact, dishes found across North India, like the Nihari Ghosht, were absent. The waiter asked us to go for Chicken Lagan (Rs 400) along with Lucknow Special Paratha (Rs 90).
The chicken dish was floating in oil and looked like nothing we had ever eaten earlier. The Lucknow Special Paratha (Rs 90), which is sold for as little as Rs 8 on Lucknow streets, was simply too dry. Only after we left did we realise that they had billed us for the Chicken Angar instead of the Chicken Lagan. Had they got us the wrong dish? We’re unsure and don’t intend to find out.
