Right from scratch
Getting even is an art in which one has to start right at the bottom if the recent incident in Vadodara is any example.india Updated: Feb 21, 2013 23:11 IST
For those of you itching to get even with real or perceived enemies, here is some heartening news. Now, you may find this method of revenge hilarious, but the person at the receiving end, if you’ll pardon the pun, did not. Ghanshyam Solanki, Vadodara’s MS University’s law faculty head, was arrested on Monday for smearing itching powder on vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh’s chair during a seminar. The incident forced Mr Singh to leave the seminar midway. Reports indicate that Mr Solanki was sore over his promotion and took this inventive route to push for his case. Later, when the erring professor was booked for “obstructing a public servant in his discharge of public functions” and causing hurt by “dangerous weapons or means”, he said that the lethal powder was not meant for Mr Singh, but his immediate boss: law faculty in-charge dean professor SS Bhattacharya. At least we have got to the bottom of that.
While we agree that the police had to do its job and arrest Solanki, let’s give the devil his due. When most people would sit and sulk and criticise bosses over appraisals and promotions, almost a viral disease of sorts as we near March, here is a man who can think creatively to push his case, though he probably has gone a little too far for his own good. After this incident, the university is unlikely to be kind to Mr Solanki and reopen his performance file.
Meanwhile, Mr Singh, who is trying to put this uncomfortable incident truly behind him, said that it is “shameful and unbelievable” that such a thing has happened and added that “normally” such behaviour is not expected from a teacher.
We agree with the vice-chancellor that Mr Solanki has set a bad example but then he should give the professor the benefit of the doubt, maybe he was really not the target. Instead, he too should think of an equally innovative idea to calm Mr Solanki’s nerves a bit: maybe look at his service file. No one would like the offender in this case to have to build his career again from scratch.
