HUNDREDS OF hammals (labourers) working at the railway godown on Laxmibai Nagar station gathered at the SP office this afternoon to protest against goondaism and extortion of hammals by criminals operating in the godown. They demanded immediate arrest of the criminals.

The immediate provocation was the attack on one Prakash son of Laxman by criminals identified as Ram Singh, Pintu and his brother Jitu. The hammals alleged that these criminals had stabbed Prakash when he refused to pay them protection money.

The hammals gathered under the banner of Railway Maal Godam Hammal Union, and shouting slogans reached the SP office. The memorandum was handed over to area CSP Arvind Tiwari.

Railway Maal Godam Hammal Union secretary Satyanarayan Verma said that around 400 hammals work at the Laxmi Bai Nagar and Metre Guage Railway station and all of them were being terrorised by Ram Singh and his cohorts.

He alleged that these criminals demand protection money in the form of charging Rs 10,000 for each rack unloaded by the hammals. Verma said that the union had lodged a report in this regard, but the GRP had brought both parties together and got them to reach a compromise. However, the extortion still continued.
