A car narrowly escaped being buried under a truck on main Palam Vihar road on Sunday after the long five-hour rain. The road had caved in, as it couldn't withstand the truck's sand load burying the truck in the sinkhole. Two other similar cave-ins were reported from Basai Road, too.

According to BS Tripathy, a resident of Sector 23A who was witness to the incident, said the accident happened at 4 p.m. Tripathy said he saw the dumper truck tilting to its right.

"It was at this time that a Maruti car overtook. The tilting truck missed the car by just an inch. Had the truck fallen on the car, it could have been fatal for the passengers. The incident occurred near Sector 23A crossing," Tripathy said.

According to him, the cave-in site was also where master sewerage lines had been laid just three-four months ago. The contractor, Tripathy alleged, had left the trenches covered with just earth. Fearing cave-ins, local residents had urged the authorities to get the trenches filled and covered properly to avoid any accident.

However, Station House Officer at Palam Vihar police station, Rajinder Singh, said no complaint has been lodged against the contractor, as work was still under way near the spot.

"The driver should have been more careful while using the road and avoided the road corners," Singh said.
