A vendor was killed when GRP personnel opened fire while trying to foil an attempt by robbers to loot passengers travelling by Jamalpur-Kiul DMU train at Dhanauri railway station in Bihar's Munger district in the wee hours today.

Upset over the vendor's death, villagers blocked the train for more than two hours.

Superintendent of Police (Railway) Bimal Kumar said a group of robbers attempted to loot the passengers when the train reached the Dhanauri railway station in the Jamalpur-Kiul section of the East Central Railway.

Th GRP personnel escorting the train soon intervened and opened fire to foil the robbery bid.

A stray bullet hit the vendor Rakesh Kumar of nearby Pavai village, killing him, the SP said.

On hearing the news of death of the vendor, angry villagers reached the station, stopped the train and confined the GRP personnel for more than two hours.

They were later persuaded by senior district and railway officials who arrived from Jamalpur to call off their agitation and set free the GRP personnel.
