Five armed men barged into a Reliance Fresh outlet at Railway Road in Gurgaon on Sunday night, held the staff hostage and fled with Rs 1.5 lakh cash, police said.

The robbers, who had covered their faces with monkey caps and mufflers, barged in when the outlet manger, Ranjan Kumar, was counting the money at 9.45 pm. They first overpowered the guard, went to the manager’s counter in the basement and snatched the cash.

They threatened the staff with dire consequences if they informed the police about the incident. After taking the cash, they pushed Kumar and escaped after closing the shutter from outside.

The police got CCTV footage of the incident and launched a search for the robbers.

“We have started investigations on the basis of the CCTV footage. We have got their description through CCTV footage. One of the accused had not covered his face. However, it is very difficult to identify those who had covered their faces. We are examining the footage and they will soon be arrested,” said Abey Singh Rao, DCP (west), Gurgaon police.

The police have not ruled out the involvement of an employee or former staffer.
