Ronaldhino to promote UN as spokesperson

His first duty will be at the UN Global Youth Leadership Summit in October to boost an effort to tackle child poverty.

Ronaldinho, whose real name is Ronaldo Assis de Moreira, was appointed a UN spokesman for sport for development and peace, and a UN world food program ambassador.

The two-time FIFA world player of the year, greeted by a small crowd of fans including UN and delegation staffers, said he was "extremely honored" by the appointments.

"Football has obviously provided me with a wonderful life, and I believe it is now my mission to give something back and help youth understand the power of sport can help them achieve their dreams," Ronaldinho said.

His first duty will be at the UN Global Youth Leadership Summit in October, where he will promote a worldwide effort to tackle child poverty.

Ronaldinho was in New York with European champion FC Barcelona, which meets New York in a friendly on Saturday at the Meadowlands.
