England captain David Beckham has said that a Wayne Rooney ribbing inspired his free kick shot that took England to the quarter finals of the FIFA 2006 World Cup.
He said Rooney told him that his famed free-kicks had lost its sheen and he should try to make amends in the second round knock out stage match against Ecuador.
He said Rooney had also told him he would be scoring in the crucial last 16 round match.
“Wazza said to me before the game I have been terrible for the last two days but I would get one in this match. I have not scored one for a while — in fact I have been struggling with them for the last two days in training,” The Sun quoted Beckham as saying.
“That’s why we were laughing at each other when I scored,” he said.
He said he also got a text message from star Brazilian footballer and his Real Madrid team-Roberto Carlos saying ‘score me a free-kick’.
“Both those things brought me a bit of luck,” Beckham added.
