Actor-turned-MP Tapas Pal is not the only Trinamool Congress leader under the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) lens for alleged links to the Rose Valley chit fund scam, sources have claimed.
It is believed that the Rose Valley chit fund scam conned the public out of Rs 15,000 crore — more money than the Saradha chit fund scam that rocked the ruling party with several leaders under investigation for their role in the scam.
“We have information that not only Pal but some other TMC leaders too had connections with the Rose Valley group... Some of them received payments. They are all under scanner,” a CBI source told HT on Friday.
Tapas Pal’s house was raided on Wednesday and sources in the CBI indicated he may be called in for interrogation. “We may also raid residences of other leaders involved in the Rose Valley scam,” a source said.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Pal said he welcomed the investigation. When asked why he hadn’t listed Rose Valley when he talked to the Centre about the illegal chit fund groups in Bengal, he claimed he wasn’t aware of their activities.
“I did not know about it then... But I have decided to offer full cooperation to the CBI sleuths investigating this matter,” Pal said.
CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose took a dig at Pal for remaining silent on Rose Valley so long. “It appears that he was a child back then, and has grown up now,” he said.
According to the CBI source, the documents seized from Pal’s house could throw light on some of the other influential people involved in the scam.
