In what could spell trouble for Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, Gangakhed police have filed an FIR against him after seizing money from a vehicle in his convoy on Wednesday.
The police found Rs 4.85 lakh in the vehicle at a check post on the Gangakhed border in Parbhani district.
While Pawar claimed that the money belonged to his party, police refused to accept the claim and subsequently registered a case against him. According to reports, cases were also registered against Parbhani district president of NCP, Vijay Bhamble, and the driver of the vehicle, Krushna Hazare.
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “The seized amount is a part of the Rs 8 lakh we had given to Pawar for campaigning. Although the police have filed an FIR, we will prove our case in court that the seized money was issued from the party fund.”
So far, cash worth Rs 15 crore has been seized by the election commission and police across the state.
