Ruling NC, oppn PDP riding on Modi to defame each other

In Kashmir, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is emerging as a central theme of the poll debate between the ruling National Conference (NC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to tarnish each others' image.

Both the parties are accusing each other of being close to the BJP in a Muslim-majority state, where any alliance with Modi may have negative impact on the predominant Muslim vote bank.

"Farooq Abdullah had crossed all limits to please Modi and other leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the past. Only couple of years back in Ahmadebad, Abdullah had said: "He can see 'Allah in Modi's eyes',"alleged PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, who is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from south Kashmir's Anantnag constituency, in Srinagar.

She alleged that Abdullah praised Modi during the Gujarat riots. "Abdullah continued to be a part of the NDA after the riots, which speaks loud about NC's thirst for power,"she said.

She accused the NC of disempowering the state assembly. "Its prestige and dignity was compromised when the NDA tossed the autonomy resolution into dustbin, which was passed by the legislature unanimously, but they still continued their services with them,"she said.

Mehbooba's NC-cosy-with-Modi salvo has come a day after the NC took pot shots at the PDP for getting intimate with the BJP and Modi.

"PDP has openly started aligning itself with the Modi-led NDA and has even gone to the extent of officially saying that they are open to forge an alliance with any party,"alleged NC spokesman Junaid Mattu.

He said the PDP is free to align with even the RSS or the VHP "since they have a democratic right to forge alliances without worrying about the sentiments of the people they tragically and falsely claim to represent."

"People are conscious of the fact that the PDP was invented and established by the BJP to weaken, fragment and bifurcate the voice and representation of the people of J&K,"he added.

The NC spokesman said the PDP has a reason to come close to Modi. "As Mufti sahib is understandably trying to repay the favour of 1999 in 2014. While gauging the reverential statements of praise for Modi that have come from Mehbooba Mufti and (PDP's) Muzaffar Baig, it's evident beyond doubt that PDP has now decided to act as the state wing of the Modi-led BJP in 2014,"said Mattu.
