The son of Prof HS Sabharwal, who died in Ujjain last week after being allegedly attacked by students, on Monday petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking a CBI probe into the circumstances leading to his father's death.
"We want the state government to hand over the case to the CBI for a fair probe as we have no faith in the local administration," Himanshu Sabharwal told reporters here after filing the petition with the Commission.
He claimed that his request to transfer the case to the Central investigating agency had been rejected by the state government.
"We have also asked NHRC to issue notices to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, sub-divisional magsitrate and police officials present at the time of the incident for encourging violence and tampering with evidence," Himanshu said.
Media should also be made respondent in the case for being witness to the incident, he added.
The aggrieved son has also written to President A P J Abdul Kalam, seeking his intervention in the matter.
Alleging apathy by the state government and the police, Himanshu said he was yet to get documents such as post-mortem report and medico-legal certificate (MLC), in the absence of which he was unable to approach the Supreme Court.
Himanshu is also planning to meet Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar to ask him to ensure a fair investigation.
