Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is no stranger to controversies in the northern region of Haryana and Punjab where he has tremendous pull. But the efforts of the dera chief to spread out to the south of the country has drawn disapproving remarks from Kerala government.
His frequent visits to Kerala are being viewed with suspicion by the Kerala government who wrote to the centre that his frequent visits and long stays were more for real estate activities and raised suspicion regarding their objectives.
The state government has refused to provide Z-plus security cover for the dera head’s “private visits (for sight-seeing and real estate business)”, saying security would be given to Singh only on payment basis for such “private visits”. Singh and his followers have been frequenting Kerala for the last few years on the pretext of rendering spiritual discourses.
The army too had sounded a note of caution regarding the activities of the Dera Sacha Sauda. In a December 2010 communication, military intelligence informed the 10 Infantry division headquarters of reports that some ex-servicemen were imparting weapons training to dera activists at their Sirsa headquarters. “Reportedly a few serving personnel have been participating in activities like the blood donation camp etc organised by the dera. You are requested to sensitise personnel to abstain from getting directly or indirectly involved with the organisation in any manner and disseminate the information.. for strict compliance” the communication said.
