Sadhana pips Varun in Vidisha survey

india Updated: Sep 20, 2006 14:56 IST

THE REPORTED ‘BJP’ survey conducted in Vidisha parliamentary constituency has caused a flutter in the party circles. The survey indicates Sadhana Singh, wife of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, as the first choice of the electorate in the by-election. BJP’s rising star Varun Gandhi finds the second place.

Interestingly, though the survey report from Vidisha appearing in a section of press has been attributed to the BJP, the Vidisha district unit and the State BJP have distanced themselves from the report. The report suggests that the survey was conducted by interviewing as many as 9580 voters cutting across castes, sub-castes, age and professions.

Meanwhile, Varun Gandhi on Tuesday met senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu in Delhi. Varun’s name has been doing the rounds in the party circles as the party’s prospective candidate for the by-poll ever since Shivraj Singh Chouhan resigned the seat after assuming the office of chief minister.

After the party’s national executive at Dehradun, the words gained momentum that Varun is the choice of party’s national leadership for the seat.

However, the name of Rajya Sabha MP Sushma Swaraj is also doing the rounds as another prospective candidate in case Varun Gandhi is not fielded. Vidisha is considered to be one of the safest seats for the party. The party would like to use Varun Gandhi during Uttar Pradesh elections while Swaraj if fielded would strengthen the party’s position in Lok Sabha.

But it seems that those willing to prevail upon the BJP leadership to field Sadhana Singh do not want to give in. Hence the ‘survey report’. At the party workers’ meetings in Vidisha constituency, an atmosphere is being created that it’s only Sadhana Singh. The report hints that if Sadhana Singh was fielded the votes in favour of the BJP would swing by at least 18 per cent.

State BJP organising general secretary Kaptan Singh Solanki said the party was not aware of any such survey being conducted.  Vidisha district BJP president Umakant Sharma also expressed his ignorance about any such survey. State BJP spokesperson Umashan-kar Gupta merely said, ‘no comments’.
