“Why will a man whose family’s annual turnover is Rs 10 crore steal a mobile phone?” asked Sahil Zaroo’s lawyer Ashwin Mishra.

Zaroo is currently in police custody for trespassing at the airport, slapping, molesting and stealing the cellphone of actress Sonal Chauhan, debuting in Mahesh Bhatt’s Jannat, on Wednesday night at the domestic airport.

Zaroo’s lawyers will apply for his bail on Friday.

“The police are trying to make him a scapegoat just because he has a couple of previous cases against him, while Chauhan is an actress,” said Mishra.

Mishra added that since all the charges levelled against Zaroo were bailable offences, the charge of stealing a mobile phone was applied later in the court by the police to get his custody. “The phone had just fallen on the ground during their tiff,” he said.

Mishra, refusing to elaborate further about the relation between Zaroo and Chauhan, said the duo knew each other for a long time and shared a close relationship, which turned sour probably after she started getting film offers.

According to the police, Zaroo and Chauhan had met at the domestic airport in Santacruz. While she was collecting her boarding pass for a flight to Hyderabad, Zaroo allegedly got into an argument and slapped her. Chauhan’s father who had come to see her off was present when the incident happened.

Central Industrial Security Force personnel, who rushed to the spot, later handed over Zaroo to the airport police station.

“Even Zaroo has lodged a non-cognisable offence against the father-daughter duo as he got nail marks during the tiff,” Mishra said.

Zaroo was in news a couple of years ago, when he was arrested by the Delhi police for allegedly supplying cocaine to Rahul Mahajan, son of late BJP leader, Pramod Mahajan.

Pramod Mahajan’s secretary Bibek Moitra had died in the incident due to an overdose.
