As the nation debates and dissects the Sheena Bora murder case, one of the most bizzare crime cases in recent times, here’s a look at what protagonists of the gripping drama have said…or not said anything at all.
Indrani Mukerjea: The woman at the centre of the murder case that has gripped the nation hasn’t been heard from since she was arrested on Monday. All we’ve had are comments from police officials and leaks saying the woman who made a meteoric rise from being a HR consultant to heading a media empire has purportedly confessed to her role in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora. These reports have detailed how Indrani, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyam Rai allegedly took Sheena to Raigad district of Maharashtra on April 24, 2012 and killed her before disposing of her body.
Peter Mukerjea: The former Star India CEO has said he was unaware Sheena was the daughter of his wife Indrani and not her sister. Expressing shock at the curious turn of events, Mukerjea told CNN-IBN, “I am dumbstruck by this level of criminality.” Mukerjea said he had been told – and believed – Indrani’s family had decided to send Sheena to the US because of her relationship with his son Rahul. He said Rahul had told him several times there was “something fishy” about this claim. He has also said he could not follow many of the conversations between Indrani and her children as the three often spoke in Assamese, and that he was unaware of any dispute over assets between the trio. When they married in 2002, only one of Indrani’s relatives attended the wedding, Mukerjea said. “I was 16 years older than her, and I was told that her parents didn’t want to meet me,” he added. Indrani also turned down his suggestions about visiting her hometown of Guwahati, he said.
Rahul Mukerjea: Peter Mukerjea’s son, who was in a relationship with Sheena for more than a year, has reportedly told police he last met her on the day of her murder. He said she left soon after Indrani called her. Rahul has reportedly said that Sheena went to meet Indrani, who was with her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and their driver. When he tried calling Sheena on her number several times, he couldn't get through to her phone. He also said he had filed a missing person's complaint about Sheena but it wasn’t taken seriously. Three days after the murder, Rahul is said to have received text messages from Sheena’s mobile number that stated she was breaking off their relationship.
Mikhail Bora: Indrani’s son from an earlier marriage, who like his sibling Sheena was brought up by their Guwahati-based grandparents, has told the media he has no doubts that his mother killed Sheena. Mikhail said his doubts about his mother were strengthened when she refused to respond to his repeated questions about his sister.
“I know there is something else behind this murder. It is not about property or money. But let her admit it first. If she does not admit it, then I will speak out at the appropriate time,” Mikhail told The Indian Express. Mikhail has also said he has some photographs that could explain the motive for the murder. “When you see those pictures, you will understand exactly what must have happened that led to Sheena’s murder,” he said. He has also told the media that Indrani and Sheena had “many” reasons for conflict but refused to give details.
Mumbai Police commissioner Rakesh Maria:
He has said police made the first breakthrough when Indrani’s driver was arrested on August 21 in an Arms Act case for illegal possession of a firearm and confessed to his involvement in the murder of Sheena. Follow-up investigations resulted in the arrest of Indrani and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna for their alleged role in the crime. Maria has also said police in Raigad had found a decomposed body in May 2012 that is now believed to be the remains of Sheena.
