CHIEF MINISTER Mulayam Singh Yadav’s love for Saifai more than shows. The UP Rural Medical Sciences and Research Institute (RMSRI), located at his native village, is now a medical college within no time, creating a record of sort for having come into existence in 11 months.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) on June 27 gave green light to start under graduate course (MBBS) at the RMSRI Saifai from the current academic session. The MCI team had inspected the institute on June 9-10.
This also comes as good news for the students who have cleared CPMT and are waiting for counselling to get admission in state medical colleges. The aspirants will now have 100 additional seats to opt for admission.
The Saifai institute will be the eighth medical college in the State, one that has been established after a gap of 50 years, say the Medical Education Department officials.
Talking to HT, secretary, Medical Education, Prashant Trivedi said the state government had planned to establish a super specialty 500-bed hospital at Saifai. In May last year, a decision was taken to open a medical college. “We put in all our resources to ensure that the college starts admitting students from the current academic session,” he said.
“The construction of the lecture hall and hostel is still continuing. All works would be completed by October. Till then we have planned to run the classes in the administrative block,” Trivedi said.
The Medical Education Department had already appointed 35 teaching faculty, while 7 teachers were sent from other state medical colleges to Saifai on deputation. After filling up the vacancies, all the seven teachers would return to their parent medical colleges, he said.
Saifai will hold number four positions among the government medical colleges in term of UG seats. KGMU has 155 seats, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur 160 seats, SN Medical College Agra has 102 seats. MLN Medical College, Allahabad 84, LLRM Medical College Meerut 82, MLB Medical College, Jhansi 40 and BRD Medical College Gorakhpur has 49 seats at UG level.
The private medical colleges, including Santosh Medical College Ghaziabad (50 seats), Subharti Medical College Meerut (100), Eras Medical College, Lucknow (100) and Rammurti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences Bareilly (100), has a total of 350 UG seats.
