Why didn’t you enter the fashion business like your father?
When I finished studies in Florida 20 years ago, I decided to find my own way. He owned some property in Chianti in the Tuscany region, so I
decided to go and live there. I started breeding trotter horses. Then a decade ago I entered the wine business.

Did your father object to your career choice?
I like the countryside and wanted to do something on my own. I do wear Cavalli (points to his black jacket). Maybe my father wanted me to be with him, but I think now he’s happy I am doing something I love and I think he’s also proud of me.

Tell us about your wine business.
We produce 40,000 bottles red Cavalli Tenuta Degli Dei wine, named after the estate. It’s a quality-oriented niche product that retails at Rs 10,990 in India. We are selling our 2006 vintage now, which is our most important vintage, since we are a young vineyard. We are satisfied with the results. The wine is made up of a blend of three grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. We want to make boutique wines only. This year I planted another two hectares so we might produce 55,000 bottles of wine, but we want to remain small. In future, we would like to produce another red wine, which is 100 per cent from one grape.

Who are your target consumers?
People who love great wine. It has freshness and elegance and suits meats, cheese and fish. It’ll suit spicy Indian cuisine.

Tell us more about the Roberto Cavalli vodka being launched here.
An American designer had suggested my father develop a bottle for a premium vodka. He designed it and they started selling it in the US in 2006. My father wanted to involve me in this, so three years ago he decided to distribute it in other countries. The vodka is produced by another Italian company and we brand and bottle it. It’s a showing-off kind of product and makes for a great style statement. Hope it becomes the new party drink in India. It’s priced at Rs 9,950.

Has your father’s name helped?
The vodka’s connected with his work because it has his name on it. I think his name has helped the vodka. I’m focusing on making quality wine.
