A two-hour training drill in the presence of coach S Narendranath, parents and physical trainer Heath Mathew. Sania Mirza was the first one to hit the centre court at the Karanataka State Lawn Tennis Association Stadium on Monday.
It was evident that Sania has improved her game a lot going into the Sony Ericsson WTA Open that begins on Tuesday. She practiced on her volley for over 15 minutes, until she got the perfect one.
Sania looked relaxed as she tried out various weapons that will be needed on Wednesday when she takes on Martina Sucha of Slovakia. “It is good to have a tough match right away. I saw her (Sucha) beat Marion Bartoli in Pattaya. She is in good form and cannot be taken lightly.
“I am getting better on the fitness front. But you are never satisfied with fitness as you try to get better and better.”
Sania said she had definitely improved this year. "I found my game after Doha (Asian Games). Then, two semifinals this year made me feel good."
She also confirmed that she would be partnering Mahesh Bhupathi in the mixed doubles at the French Open.
“Yes, we are playing in the French Open. I cannot be sure about the Wimbledon and the US Open. Mahesh wanted to partner me in the last couple of Grand Slams. Even I was looking forward to that but because of other commitments we had to wait. His backhands returns are the best.”
