Anant Vikram Singh, son of Amethi royal and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, formally joined the BJP in Lucknow on Sunday along with his supporters.

He straightaway demanded the re-opening of the Syed Modi murder case in which his father and stepmother Amita Singh were exonerated. Modi, an eight-time national badminton champion was shot dead by assailants around on July 28, 1988.

Anant, the son of Singh’s first wife Garima, also spoke of his plans to contest the 2017 UP polls from Amethi saying that “if given a chance he would like to work for development (of the region).”

Congress MP Sanjay Singh refused to comment on the issue. “I am not aware of it,” was all he said.

Anant denied that his personal life had pushed him to join the BJP. He also praised Smriti Irani, the Union human resource development minister, for putting up a fight in Amethi against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
