The CBI on Monday was granted seven-day custody of Saradha chairman Sudipta Sen and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh along with four others in connection with the multi-crore chit fund scam. The Supreme Court on May 9 this year had asked the CBI to probe the Saradha multi-crore chit fund scam.

The Bengal government and CM Mamata Banerjee had opposed CBI probe both in Supreme Court and state assembly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his series of election campaigns in Bengal demanded strong punishment against the beneficiaries in Saradha chit fund. Even Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi sought punishment against the persons behind the scam.

The Saradha scam surfaced in April, 2013 after Sudipta Sen, along with Debjani Mukherjee, Manoj Nagel and Arvind Chauhan were arrested from Kashmir. Ghosh was arrested in November last year.

Thousands of depositors lost their money in the Saradha scam that rocked the nation last year.
