The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday carried out searches at 30 locations in Kolkata, Odisha, Guwahati and Delhi — including the premises of former Union minister Matang Singh — as part of its probe into the Saradha chit fund scam.

The agency also carried a search at the Odisha residence of a group firm’s director — described as an alleged odd-job man whose chief attribute lay in his culinary skills that were valued by his bosses. “He is reckoned to be very close to a top group official,” said a CBI source. “Our team went to his place as he is a director of one of the firms but he turned out to be a barely-educated odd-job man, which stumped us,” the source added.

In Delhi, searches were undertaken at the Gol Market residence and office of Singh, a former Union minister of state for home affairs, and residences of his former wife Manoranjana.

“We suspect the former minister was close to the Saradha group’s top bosses. We are examining allegations that funds were invested in enterprises including a TV channel connected with the minister,” said the source.

The agency also searched the premises of former IPS officer Rajat Majumdar, executive committee member of the East Bengal club Debabrata Sarkar and chairman and managing director, Saradha group, Sudipto Sen.
