A 25-year-old Saudi Arabian woman, who arrived in Kerala with her lover on a fake passport here yesterday, has been arrested.
The woman Haya and her lover Abdul Rahaman Shariff (34) from Mangalore, have been arrested for violating the Passport Act, police said today.
Emigration authorities who noticed that Haya's photo had been affixed onto the passport of Fathima, hailing from Kollam, handed over the couple to the airport police.
Haya, clad in burqa, told police that her father, Abdul Rasheed, was against her relationship with Shariff. So he had forcibly married her off to a 56-year-old man whom she claimed to have divorced after two months.
As her father, a Saudi national, was allegedly preparing to get her married off again, Haya told the police that she managed to escape to India using a fake passport.
Haya's mother hails from Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.
Shariff had been working in Riyadh since 1999 as a salesman. With help from two of his friends, including a Keralite, a fake passport was arranged, he told police.
The Nedumbassery police has handed over the case to the crime wing of the police.
Crime detachment DYSP, K V Vijayan, told PTI that the two would be produced before the Judicial first class magistrate, Aluva today. A case under the Passport Act has been registered against them.
