The Supreme Court on Friday set aside the Madras High Court order permitting the construction of two arches in Perambalur in Tamil Nadu to commemorate the birthday of the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2005.

The judgement was passed by a Bench headed by Justice S B Sinha which said public property can’t be used for it.

After the High Court order was challenged, the apex court had ordered to maintain status quo on it.

The Supreme Court had on April 2005 ordered status quo on the construction of two arches on highways in Tamil Nadu to mark the 57th birthday celebration of the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at Thuraiyur-Perambalur road and Thuraimangalam-Bungalow road.
