School students excelling in state-level sports meets are being provided scholarships by the Puducherry government to encourage them proficient in sports scholarships, according to revenue and sports and youth affairs miinister Malladi Krishna Rao.
He was speaking at a function here yesterday after giving away scholarships totalling Rs 7.9 lakh to 115 school students, including those from private institutions, under a scheme of the Sports Authority of India in Puducherry.
Each student was given Rs 6,600 in recognition of their achievements in athletics, boxing, gymnastics, karate, kho kho, powerlifting and a number of other sports and games in 2007-2008.
Rao said the SAI had disbursed Rs 6.5 lakh last year to 105 students. The number of beneficiaries had now risen to 115, he said.
