A school bus was set ablaze by a mob, which was trying to enforce the strike called by hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, in Khanyar area in Srinagar on Saturday, official sources said.
A group stopped the bus belonging to a private school near Rangerstop in Khanyar area on Saturday morning and asked the driver and the lone student on board to get off, they said, adding that the mob then set fire to the vehicle.
However, timely action by police and fire personnel saved the vehicle from being destroyed completely, they said.
The mob fled minutes before the arrival of police on the spot, they said. No arrests have been made so far in this connection.
Geelani and moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the incident.
"There is no place for acts of violence or arson in our freedom struggle. The youth should follow the protest programme given by the leadership," Geelani said.
Mirwaiz demanded a probe into the incident to unmask the culprits who wanted to malign the peaceful struggle in Kashmir.
Elsewhere, normal life was affected in the Kashmir Valley due to the strike called by Geelani.
Shops, private offices and private schools remained closed while public transport was off the roads. However, private vehicles could be seen plying on the roads.
