School kids add sheen to festivity

Haryana Minister for Cooperatives and Housing Satpal Sangwan inaugurated district-level celebrations for the 63rd Republic Day with the unfurling of the national flag at the Tau Devi Lal stadium here on Thursday.

Apart from a colourful cultural show put up by students, the administration marked the occasion by honouring 37 persons for their outstanding performance in various fields. Cheques of R18 lakh were distributed to 12 sportspersons of the district who won medals in the 34th National Games.

Also, four schools received cheques of Rs1 lakh each under Haryana government's School Beautification Scheme.

Tableaus by different government departments to display development works were also part of the function. The Gurgaon Traffic Police, Health department and Sarv Shiksha project won the first, second and third prize respectively.

While SN Sidheshwar Public School stood first in the cultural programs category, Lord Jesus Public School stood second and Dev Samaj Vidya Niketan and DPS Maruti Kunj stood third.

Taking the celebrations forward, Sangwan announced a holiday for school children on January 27 and a grant of R2.51 lakh to distribute sweets among the participants.
