Police has recovered the naked corpse of a school girl from the bushes around a narrow water channel near Teachers Colony in Goilkera town, sparking suspicion that the minor was killed after being raped.

The deceased has been identified as Elis Barjo, a student of class-4 at St Paul School, Goilkera located in the Maoist infested West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Elis’ father Joseph Barjo and her uncle Shivlen Barjo have lodged an FIR with the Goilkera Police alleging rape and murder after police struggled to recover the body on the face of an angry crowd demanding immediate arresting of the culprit.

“We are investigating every aspect. It is feared that the girl was killed after being raped, which could only be confirmed after post mortem and medical examination. We’ve lodged a case against unknown assailants and will arrest them at any cost,” Patras Nag, Goilkera officer-in-charge (OC), said on Friday.

Elis had been missing since Thursday evening after going to the channel for bathing and washing clothes at around 4 pm. Relatives searched for her after she didn’t return home till late evening but couldn’t trace her. Her body was finally recovered around 12 pm on Friday. Police later sent the body to Chaibasa for post mortem. Police said she was strangled to death and then her head was crashed with stones.
