Schools, malls join in to pass on gift of learning in Mumbai

Hundreds of students across 25 schools in Mumbai gifted the joy of learning to the underprivileged, as they generously donated thousands of books for children between three to eight years of age.

Drop boxes placed at city schools between September 27 and October 9 were filled with textbooks, activity books, and those related to science, art and general knowledge as part of the ‘bag of books’ activity.

These will be given to the non-governmental organisation Pratham and other groups involved with school education. Drop boxes were also placed at select book stores and retail outlets in the city.

Boxes and standees were placed at seven Crossword stores, including those at Kemps Corner; Inorbit mall, Malad, R-City mall, Ghatkopar, R mall Thane, IMAX, Wadala, Dynamix Mall, Juhu, and Nirmal Lifestyle, Mulund. HyperCity stores in Ghodbunder, Viviana mall and Malad also donated merchandise worth Rs 1,85,000 to Pratham, including 2,500 kits comprising of stationary and exercise books.

Inorbit Mall and Oberoi Mall in Goregaon also encouraged shoppers to donate books. A class room-like set up was created in the atrium space of the malls on October 5, 6, 12 and 13.

“We are delighted to partner with HT for this opportunity to do our bit for children in need. We hope this effort will, in some way, help light up the lives of children,” said Darshana Shah, senior vice president, marketing and visual merchandising, HyperCity.
