Police have deployed 15,000 personnel to ensure security during the Independence Day celebrations in Chennai, City Police Commissioner R Sekar said on Thursday.
All resources are being mobilised to prevent any untoward incident, especially in the wake of recent bomb threats to the city by a terror module, Sekar told reporters in Chennai.
Members of the module planned to carry out bomb explosions in Chennai and Tirunelveli on or before Independence Day, police said.
"The 15,000 strong Chennai police is conducting day and night checks across the city and carrying out regular surveillance at lodges and hotels," Sekar said.
Besides the police force, more homeguard personnel are also being roped in to assist the police in its security measures, he said.
Lodge owners have been instructed to inform police about the movement of suspicious persons. The police have also intensified vehicle checks.
The Tirunelveli police has already announced that a large number of police personnel will be posted in and around the VOC stadium in the city, where the tricolour will be hoisted on August 15.
