Security beefed up at Kerala tourist spots

india Updated: Jan 07, 2007 19:47 IST

Police have strengthened security measures at all tourist locations across Kerala following a brutal attack on a Swedish couple holidaying in Thekkady.

"Police officials have been instructed to provide extra security at all tourists locations in the state," Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told reporters on Kochi on Sunday.

Eva Coaster, a 55-year-old tourist, was attacked on Saturday. The attacker, identified as Santhosh, has been arrested for stabbing the woman with a knife before attacking her husband.

The Swedish tourist received initial treatment at a nursing home in Thekkady and was later moved to a hospital in Kochi.

Balakrishnan visited the woman and assured her that all steps would be taken for her return to her country. Santhosh, who is currently in police custody, had made an unsuccessful suicide attempt last year.
