A bomb-disposal squad on Monday conducted searches at the premises of a famous shrine in downtown Srinagar ahead of a visit by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah there on Tuesday.

The chief minister and other mainstream leaders are expected to visit the Naqash Bandh Sahib shrine to pay homage to 22 people killed by Dogra rulers on July 13, 1931, fighting against the autocratic rule in the state.

Security in and around the shrine has been beefed up to avoid any untoward incident, official sources said, adding plain-clothed policemen equipped with mine detectors searched lawns of the shrine including the graveyard.
