Security forces have apprehended two Maoists after an hour long gun-battle in the jungles of Kalimela in Malkangiri district, police said on Saturday.

The exchange of fire took place on Friday night in the forest located between Kurup and MV-70 villages under Kalimela police station when the security personnel, comprising CRPF jawans and police, fired nearly 200 rounds.

The Maoists fired about 25 rounds intermittently, the police said.

The police captured two of the ultras when they were fleeing to nearby Punjiguda forest. Two grenades, two electronic detonators and about 25 metres of fuse wire were seized from their possession.

The Maoists also exchanged fire with the police for nearly an hour near Motu on Friday night.

No security personnel was injured in the exchange of fire in the two places.

Police said Maoists had activated a claymore mine near MV-126 village on Friday in which a CRPF havildar was killed and a head constable was injured.

The havildar, whose condition had deteriorated on Friday, was airlifted by a naval helicopter and flown to Visakhapatnam where he was admitted to a hospital.
