WHILE THE women's organisations are battling for the justice in the Ashiana rape case, the accused, who enjoy patronage from the powers that be are exerting pressure on the parents of the victim to give the statement in court in their favour.

On the other hand, CO Sarojininagar Mahendra Yadav, admitting the frequent threats to the victim's family, said that two armed constables had been deployed at the victim's house to ensure security of the kin round-the-clock.

The policemen were deployed earlier too but were withdrawn following requirement in some other unavoidable duties.

Only four days ago, unidentified car-borne persons had arrived at the house of the victim and threatened the father of the victim with dire consequences if he did not give a statement in favour of the named accused during trial of the case in court.

The unwanted visitors had even tempted the victim's father with a house and financial help to start a small business in Ashiana area. But the condition was to follow the directives of the defence lawyers. They also asked the father to convince his daughter (the rape victim) to feign ignorance when she was taken for the identity parade of the named accused.

It was further specified by the unidentified goons that if the victim's father did not follow the directives he, his wife, daughter and son would have to face serious consequences later.

As the car-borne hooligans left the place, the harried family contacted the local police and the CO immediately spared two armed constables for security.

The named accused, including nephew of mafia don-turned ex-Samajwadi Party MLC Arun Shanker Shukla ‘Anna’ had criminally assaulted the minor girl on May 2, 2005. Anna, who had initially explained that he had separated from his brother Kailash Shanker Shukla and the latter's son (the accused), had come out openly in favour of his kin later.

Anna did not make any move during the tenure of former SSP Navniet Sikera but he swung into action soon after Ashutosh Pandey took charge. The don, having access to corridors of power, had called up the investigating officer (IO) in a case related to the Ashiana rape case, pending for investigation at Mahanagar police station in September last.

The case was related to the attempt made on the life of a key witness in the Ashiana rape case. The don had summoned the complainant too. Significantly, both the IO and the complainant were called at the SSP's camp office.
