Five Maoists were killed and a CRPF officer received injuries in an encounter at a jungle in this district on Friday, police said.

Assistant Commandant of CRPF SN Singh shot dead the five Maoists in the encounter, which took place at the jungle about 75 km from the district headquarters, despite being hit by a bullet in his leg, District Superintendent of police Praveen Kumar Singh said.

"We could recover only one body as bodies of the other four were taken away by Maoists who retreated after the security personnel fired about one thousand bullets and explosives," Singh said.

A suspected extremist, Vikash Kumar Dangi of Chatra district, and a 14-year-old boy of the Maoist's 'Baal Dasta' (a squad of children) were arrested after the hour-long encounter, he said.

The SP said doctors have since operated upon the injured CRPF officer and removed the bullet.

The Maoists used AK-56, SLR and LNG weapons during the encounter. A huge cache of weapons and ammunition were seized from the site which included one SLR, two .303 rifles, one regular rifle, fifty crude bombs, five pipe guns, geletine sticks, explosive gel, latest model of stretchers and a large pairs of uniform.
