AN OFFICE-BEARER of Bara Birwa Fruit and Vegetable Vendors Association made an abortive bid to commit self-immolation outside the LDA office in Gomti Nagar on Saturday.

The incident occurred when hundreds of fruit/vegetable vendors of Bara Birwa locality on the Kanpur Road gathered outside the LDA office at 1 pm to lodge a protest against the latter’s move to relocate them. The traders were annoyed when they were prevented by the private security personnel engaged by LDA from entering the office through the main gate.

Santosh Kumar Singh, an office-bearer of the association, tried to commit self-immolation. Singh’s colleagues caught hold of him and put out the fire before he could immolate himself..

Sensing trouble, LDA officials sent an SOS to the Gomtinagar police station. The police arrived and used a mild force to disperse the demonstrators. They took Santosh to custody.

On March 27 Santosh informed the LDA officials that he would immolate himself if his demands were not met.

On March 31, LDA Vice-Chairman BB Singh wrote a letter to district magistrate RN Tripathi and SSP Ashutosh Pandey informing them about Santosh’s threat and urging them to take appropriate action against him. But no preventive action was taken by the authorities who did not even deploy adequate policemen at the LDA office.
