Fifty-year-old Radha Selvarajan hogged the limelight on the rain-hit second day of the JK Tyre National Racing Championship’s third round, winning both the races in the Saloon car category at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore on Sunday.
Selvarajan displayed his mastery of the wet conditions to come home miles ahead of the competition as Siddharth Kishore and Rajaraman finished second in the first and second races respectively.
Sivaramakrishnan shrugged off the disadvantage of starting from the rear — the 33-year-old missed the Saturday qualifying due to personal reasons — to finish third on both the occasions.
In the Formula LGB Swift class, Saran Vikram followed up his splendid win in the first race on Saturday with another winning performance in the second while Mazhar Ahmed too pulled off a double in the Superbike 1000cc event.
Persistent drizzle meant the races in the Formula Rolon Chevrolet series were postponed till next week. But what was others’ loss turned out to be Selvarajan’s gain.
“From the time I started to race, whenever it rained I would never come to the pit. I would stay on the track. Those days of learning helped me,” Selvarajan said. But that is only half the story. Selvarajan, by virture of being the son of a automobile employee, is thorough with the mechanical aspect of racing.
“I set up my own car. So when the conditions changed from dry to wet, I could make the changes myself whereas others had to rely on their mechanics,” he said. K. Kumaraswamy
