Soon after the release of tapes confirming the presence of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in Karachi, the Shiv Sena dared the Modi government to capture one of India’s most wanted terrorists in an operation similar to the one undertaken by the US to eliminate Osama bin Laden.

Dawood is the mastermind of the serial blasts that shook Mumbai in 1993. The government at the Centre had on Sunday requested Pakistan to hand over the fugitive, who according to new evidence is based in the country. And the Sena, in an editorial that appeared in its mouthpiece Saamana on Monday, questioned why the government was releasing information about him without having any action plan in place.

The Dawood files and other evidence had been making the rounds for a long time, and giving more proof of the existence of terrorists was proving unfruitful, the editorial read.

“For the last few years, we have been producing proof and asking Pakistan to hand them over to us, but the government has always turned back and denied their presence on their land. Will the government of the day dare to show the same courage as USA did in the case of Bin Laden? …There is no use if there is no action,” the editorial said.

The views expressed in the editorial are seen as being those of Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

The US had, in a secret mission in May 2011, flown a team of special forces into Abbottabad, Pakistan, and raided a compound where Bin Laden was suspected to be residing.

They had ambushed the building in the middle of the night, shot Bin Laden dead and left the country with his body in a covert operation that had caught the Pakistani authorities unawares.
