Shiv Sena activists ransacked the office of Chief Conservator of Forest here demanding the release of 164 tribals arrested for allegedly encroaching on forest land.

The Sainiks, led by party MLA from Darwha Sanjay Rathod, barged into the office to submit a memorandum related to their demand on Friday. When they did not find any senior official around to hand over the memorandum, they vandalised the office premises.

According to District chief of the Sena Pravin Pande, the forest officials of Pandharkawda Forest Division have launched a mass anti-encroachment drive and so far arrested 164 tribals, including women and children, with police help.

They have registered criminal offences against the tribals, charging them with encroaching on forest land for the purpose of cultivation. The arrested tribals and languishing in jail as no one is there to seek their bail, he said.

"We had taken out a morcha to the Chief Conservator of Forest office to submit a memorandum demanding the withdrawal of false criminal cases against the tribals and their release. But there was no responsible person in the office to accept our memorandum," Pande alleged.
