Senior Congress leader Sudarshanan passes away

One time senior Congress leader GK Moopanar's close aide and Congress Legislative Party leader in State Assembly D Sudarshanan, aged 67, died of a heart attack at a private hospital on Saturday evening.

Sudarshanan, who came to participate in the ongoing World Classical Tamil Conference, was admitted to a local hospital on Thursday morning after he complained of severe chest pain.

Doctors attending on him tried their best to revive him for two days. "Doctors tried their best to revive him after his cardiac arrest, but could not do so. The official confirmation of the death came at around 9 pm," Congress party sources here told Hindustan Times.

Chief minister M Karunanidhi and his ministerial colleagues visited the hospital to console the members of the grieving family.

Sudarshanan leaves behind three sons. His wife Prema had died 10 years ago.

Sudarshanan, was first elected to the Tamil Nadu assembly in 1991. He had also served in various capacities in the party including that of the treasurer. He was born in Panruti village near Neyveli, famous for its lignite mines, on April 6 1943.
