The special investigation team on Friday arrested senior CPM leader P Mohanan in connection with the murder of rebel Marxist TP Chandrasekharan, who was killed in early May.
With his arrest, the number of people taken into custody has crossed 50. Angry party workers stoned the Vatakara (northern Kozhikode district) court complex, where he was brought. The police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. Many vehicles parked in the court complex were damaged.
Kerala home minister T Radhakrishnan deplored the attack on the judiciary. "It exposes the real colour of the party. You cannot browbeat democratic institutions like this," he said.
Mohanan is a member of the Kozhikode district committee and his wife, KK Lathika, is a party legislator.
PK Kunanandhan, the recently arrested Panur area committee member, had reportedly told the police Mohanan knew about the plot to kill Chandrasekharan and gave the necessary instructions in this regard. According to the police, he is one of the key conspirators. He has been remanded in police custody for seven days.
Reacting to the latest arrest, Chandrasekharan's widow, KK Rema, said the involvement of more such leaders would come to light soon.
The CPM state secretariat said it was part of a conspiracy to implicate senior leaders in the case. The party has called a shutdown in Kozhikode district on Saturday.
