The Mumbai crime branch arrested a serial molester who has allegedly molested 100 girls in the last six months.
Ravi Verma (32) who also used to blackmail his targets was picked up from his residence in Ghansoli on Saturday.
<b1>According to the police, Verma used a unique modus operandi to trap his targets. He used four mobile phones, which were registered on bogus names and addresses. He would make calls on random numbers and on finding a woman answering the call he would continue the conversation. However, on hearing a male voice on the other side he would immediately disconnect the call.
“He introduced himself as AK Gupta, senior vigilance officer from MTNL and would tell the woman on the other side that there have been obscene calls made from her number,” said Rakesh Maria, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
He said that Verma used to tactfully find out the details of other family members in the woman’s house.
On finding that the woman has a young daughter, he would call the mother to Mittal Towers in Nariman Point for investigation purposes. After some time, he would dial the number again and tell the daughter that her mother would be arrested if she doesn’t come to Airoli bridge with some necessary details.
“He always called the girls in the evening hours and made sure that the mother had left the house to meet him so that there was no scope of suspicion,” added Maria.
The moment his target would reach Airoli Bridge, Verma would force her in a red Indica. He would then forcefully undress the girl and take her nude pictures. After finishing his job, he used to push the girl from the moving car on the bridge.
“He used to apply mud on the number plate so that nobody could read it,” Maria said. He added that Verma then made calls to his victims and blackmailed them.
There are about 34 complaints registered against Verma at Navghar police station and nine at Mulund, Thane and other places in the last six months. There were also some complaints against him in 2003 at nine other police stations, but he never got arrested.
Verma owns a transport business and rents car for Pune. He has been married for three years and has a two-year-old child.
