A local court in Surat on Monday declared the self-styled godman Asaram's son Narayan Sai 'absconded' in a rape and sexual assault case filed against him and his jailed father by two sisters in the city.

The Surat police has been trying to nab Sai for a month now and had raided ashrams run by the father-son duo at several places across the country.

"The court has declared him as absconded on our plea," a Surat police officer said, adding the police would now intensify efforts to track the accused.

Ever since the complaint was lodged against him and his father, Sai has gone underground but has periodically issued press advertsiments to claim that he was not hiding from the authorities.

Following the complaint, the Gujarat police arrested Asaram and put him behind bars in Jodhpur in connection with a separate case of sexual assault filed by a 16-year-old girl.

The police had brought Asaram for interrogation for four days and subsequently, his custody was handed back to the Rajasthan police, who had originally arrested him in the first week of September.
