Shahabuddin to be treated outside Bihar

india Updated: Jul 22, 2006 14:17 IST

Jailed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Mohammad Shahabuddin, suffering from serious spinal problems, is likely to be sent outside Bihar for medical treatment.

A special medical committee examined Shahabuddin in the state's Siwan prison after he complained of spinal problems. They have recommended that he be sent outside the state for treatment.

"The medical committee recommended that jailed RJD MP Shahabuddin be taken to a specialised spinal treatment centre outside state," said an official on Saturday.

The official added that the final decision on the matter would be taken by the state government.

Shahabuddin, who has been charged in over 40 criminal cases, including murder, abduction and possession of illegal arms, underwent the health check-up on Thursday after he filed a petition last month seeking specialised treatment outside Bihar.

The medical committee, constituted by a directive of the Patna High Court, visited Shahabuddin's jail cell under tight security.

Earlier this week, the court had ordered the re-examination of Shahabuddin's medical condition after a panel of three neurosurgeons refused to see him.

The court directed the state medical board to review the MP's health and submit a report July 25.

The court nominated a panel of three neurosurgeons -- from Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital and Bangalore's Apollo hospital -- to examine Shahabuddin's health and decide whether he needed treatment outside.

The panel, however, reportedly refused to conduct a check-up inside jail.

Meanwhile, the RJD has repeatedly alleged that state government is deliberately denying treatment to Shahabuddin as part of a conspiracy against him.
