An alleged contract killer has confessed that he and two others were hired for Rs 3 lakh to kill activist Shehla Masood in Bhopal last year, said police on Wednesday.

Irfan Samay, who was picked up by the UP Special Task Force from Kanpur late last night, was produced at a special court in Indore along with main accused architect Zahida Parvez, 36, and two others.

Among the others was Bhopal-based builder Shakib Danger, who allegedly worked as a mediator between Parvez and the killers.

According to sources, Samay was brought to Bhopal on Tuesday night. Nabbed after another accomplice Shanu Olanga was killed in a gang rivalry in November, Samay reportedly told Kanpur police about his involvement in the murder. Parvez got Masood killed as she suspected her husband was having an affair with her, said police.

Samay said it was Olanga who shot Masood dead on August 16, 2011 with a country-made pistol. Later they returned to Kanpur.

HT had on Wednesday reported that Masood's shooter - Olanga - was dead.

Of the Rs 3 lakh promised, Parvez paid Olanga Rs 2 lakh in advance, but did not pay the rest.

The CBI, meanwhile, is verifying the role of a local legislator, who is perceived to be close to Parvez, for his alleged involvement in the case.

On Tuesday night, the CBI team interrogated Parvez till late night. They searched her house and seized some documents.

Her husband Asad Parvez, who owns two petrol pumps in the city, was also questioned, but was later allowed to go.

Police said Samay has a criminal record and several cases are registered against him. He has been jailed several times.
