THE AGITATING UPSRTC employees’ allegations about financial irregularities in the purchase of air-conditioned Shatabdi buses may not be true but the complaints about breakdowns in the much-publicised buses have started coming in.
Though the UPSRTC management described these problems as “teething problems” which they claimed would be over soon, the field staff complained there was something wrong with the manufacturing of the Shatabdi buses or else, they argued, serious defects could not occur in the new buses.
For example, a Shatabdi bus plying between Lucknow and Varanasi has several defects. There are leakages in its roof. So when it rains, passengers sitting in an otherwise cosy bus have to ‘run for cover’!
On Saturday, a wheel of the same bus got jammed on its way to Varanasi. The bus had to be taken to the Telco workshop in Varanasi. The bus resumed its operation only on Sunday. The bus also has a problem with its AC system and a supporter was found to be broken causing noise.
And only today, a Shatabdi bus operating between Lucknow-Jaipur via Agra had to be sent without its AC being working as its AC plant developed some fault before it could start from the Charbagh bus-station.
Another Shatabdi bus plying on the same route had problems with its wheels which got heated up very soon forcing the driver to stop the bus to allow the wheels to cool down. However, the fault has been removed now.
Similar is the case with one of the Shatabdi buses plying on Lucknow-Delhi route. The fan-belt of this bus is defective and gets jammed, causing problem to the engine. Besides, the complaints about lubricants leaking from the same bus are also coming in.
